The Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) is the exam NYC 8th graders (and some 9th graders) take to apply to the city's specialized high schools such as Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Tech. From fall 2026 it is a computer-adaptive test of 50 ELA and 50 Math questions, scored on a scale up to 800.

How can my child practice for the NY State Tests?

AceMyStates offers grade-matched adaptive practice for the New York State ELA and Math tests for grades 3-8, plus full-length computer-based exam simulations that mirror the real Nextera testing format.

Is there a free SHSAT practice test?

Yes — AceMyStates includes a free full-length 100-question SHSAT practice test in the fall 2026 computer-based format, with no sign up required to take it.

What grades does AceMyStates cover?

Grades 3 through 8. Content is locked to your child's grade level so practice always matches what they are learning.

Is AceMyStates a government or New York State website?

No. AceMyStates is a private, independent test-preparation app. Despite the name, it is not a government website and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the New York State Education Department, the New York City Department of Education, or any government agency. It does not handle state services, benefits, licensing, registration, or official test scores. Official NY State assessment information is published by NYSED at nysed.gov, and SHSAT registration is handled by the NYC DOE at schools.nyc.gov.

What does the name AceMyStates mean?

It is short for acing your New York State tests. The name refers to the NY State ELA and Mathematics assessments that students in grades 3-8 take each spring, not to US states or state government services.
